Dead leaf butterfly

A well-camouflaged brown butterfly rests with wings closed on a lichen-covered basalt rock surface, displaying its remarkable dead-leaf mimicry underside pattern. The intricate mottled brown, rust, and tan markings on the underwing closely resemble a dried, weathered leaf — one of nature's finest examples of cryptic camouflage. The sharply pointed forewing tip visible on the left further enhances the leaf-like illusion. The butterfly appears to be mud-puddling or resting on the damp, algae-and-lichen-covered rocky ground, a common behaviour among nymphalid butterflies.
